Digital explorers have been given the opportunity to see inside one of The Tank Museum’s nine exhibitions thanks to Google Street View.
The flagship Tank Story Exhibition has been captured in a series of 360-degree photographs and stitched together to enable virtual travellers to “walk” around the tanks and other artefacts displayed. Users on Google Maps and Google Earth can now zoom in and explore 26 key tanks from the last 100 years, from the first tank right up to the Challenger 2, currently in service.
Museum spokesman Nik Wyness said: “This is a great way to showcase the size and scale of The Tank Museum – whilst providing a tantalising glimpse of this compelling modern museum to those who have yet to visit and to those who may live too far away to visit.
“It’s part of an increasing online presence we have built for The Tank Museum using free online tools, which is being enjoyed by audiences around the world.”
The project was made possible with the support of Google Arts and Culture which contacted The Tank Museum last year, asking to immortalise its flagship exhibition hall on the Street View application.
Google Street View features other world-renowned institutions like The British Museum, London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Musee d’Orsay, Paris.
It is hoped that the museum’s other galleries including the popular World War One and World War Two exhibitions will be added in the future, to provide a full virtual tour.
