The A-10 has been engaged in combat over Afghanistan since 2002. Combat Aircraft concludes its assessment of the first Operation ‘Anaconda’ missions, which proved to be a baptism of fire.

AS US FORCES launched combat missions into Afghanistan under Operation ‘Enduring Freedom’ (OEF) on October 7, 2001, the A-10 Thunderbolt II was not in the initial inventory of participants. Instead it was standing combat search and rescue (CSAR) alert at Ahmed Al Jaber, in Kuwait, and flying Operation ‘Southern Watch’ (OSW) missions over southern Iraq.
