A powerful and unsettling account of two Operation Banner tours of Northern Ireland with 3 Para during the 1970s, says John Carroll

There are a lot of books about 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland on my bookshelves, but I have steered clear of writing about them. There's more than one reason for this. First, it's impossible to generalise about the 30 years of Operation Banner, the longest continuous military deployment in British history. Second, whoever you speak to about the conflict offers a different opinion. Through work and friendship, I have spoken to people on both sides of pretty much every line that can be drawn through that intensly bitter conflict.
