Alf’s birthday surprise

The Weald Foundation recently hosted World War Two veteran Alf Nicholson as he came to look at some wartime classics that brought back plenty of memories

Called up in 1942 when it was discovered he could drive, Alf Nicholson was assigned to 179 Field Ambulance during World War Two. After completing his training, he was given a girder-forked Matchless G3 and was later issued a brand new G3L with telescopic forks, which he rode for the rest of his war.This included being part of the landings on Juno Beach on D-Day Plus Two and continuing right through into Germany until the surrender in May of 1945.
