Callum Dickson dives into World of Tanks with a continued focus on early tank designs

Having experienced life as a British and German tanker during the inter-war period I decided to branch out to the other major World War One combatant I had left out, France.

Its first tank gives you that World War One feel as you drive into battle in the Renault FT-17, the first tank with a fully rotating turret. This tank, first designed in 1916, would see action throughout the final years of World War One and would become the basis for much French armour design during the interwar period.

For my first engagement, I took this classic tank onto the unfamiliar ground of the Russian Steppes. Compared with its British and German counterparts it flew across the battlefield, and I immediately knocked out a Polish 4TP. I then duelled from range with a Swedish Strv FM/21 which unfortunately landed the kill shot necessary to take me out.

One problem I had with the FT-17 was its turret struggled to aim down and so attacking from high ground at times was an issue that became especially prevalent in the mountainous Italian countryside. Here I decided, despite how tempting the heavier Char B1 was, I would go down the lig…
