Big gin Hill Spitfire nears completion

The Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, home of the famous ‘Spitfire factory’, draws near to completing its four-year restoration of a Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IA. Tom Baker finds out more

Staff at the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar are close to finishing their four-year restoration of a noteworthy Spitfire Mk.IA at the site’s self-contained ‘Spitfire factory’. Once completed, it will be the 16th example of the type to be restored at the site. The World War Two singleseat fighter is arguably the most iconic British aircraft ever produced. Famed and fabled for its use by the RAF alongside the Hurricane in repelling the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire would supersede the Hurricane as Fighter Command’s principal aircraft as the war progressed and would be used in every theatre of war, from the Mediterranean to the Pacific.
