Bracelet Clue To British Officer’s Identity

AS BRITAIN at War went to press came news from Matteo Pierro in Salerno of an important new development in the search for the identification of the remains of two British soldiers, discovered in March 2017 on the Giovi Hills by the organization: ‘Associazione Salerno 1943’. The remains were identified as belonging to British soldiers by association with objects and equipment found nearby.

After contacting the local Police and the MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), the Salerno organisation’s researchers focused attention on official reports and the personal diaries of British soldiers who participated in the battle at Giovi. From these, it was discovered that on the hills around Salerno, troops from the Hampshire and Leicestershire regiments, and Royal Marine Commandos, all fought. This led to the conclusion that the remains must have belonged to missing soldiers from one of these regiments. Now, though, a new discovery may well help to narrow the search for at least one of the ‘missing in action’ soldiers.

Just a few metres from where the human remains were found, a silver bracelet was discovered which had the following inscription:

‘121662 R. Donald Brown, Pres.’
