Predictions of horrific civilian causalities in the UK during the German bombing campaign in the Second World War thankfully never came to pass, due to excellent precautions and the unbreakable spirit of the British people.

Britain had been bracing itself for war long before Neville Chamberlain addressed his people at 11am on Sunday September 3, 1939. The prime minister’s solemn announcement that the nation was once again to fight with Germany was the denouement of a political and diplomatic crisis that had been intensifying since Adolf Hitler’s accession to power in 1933.
