Banastre Tarleton blazed a trail through the colonies during the American Revolution and gained an infamous reputation – but was it deserved?

Earl Cornwallis was glowing in his assessment. In the midst of a campaign against the infernal rebels, he wrote, “I wish you would get three legions and divide yourself into three parts: we can do no good without you.”

The recipient of such praise was Banastre Tarleton, an impetuous and driven horse soldier who led the British Legion during the American Revolution and, whether deserved or not, earned the lasting enmity of those whom he fought.
