British tanks to lead huge increase in Ukraine support

On January 16, 2023, following an earlier statement from the Ministry of Defence committing the United Kingdom to a programme matching or exceeding previous militar y support to Ukraine through 2023, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a major uplift with the provision of a substantial increase in aid to combat Russian aggression following its invasion in February 2022.

Described by the MOD as, “the most significant package of combat power sent to Ukraine to date”, the support deal includes the provision of a full squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks with their associated armoured recover y and repair vehicles. It is a major “gear change” in Western outlooks to militar y provision to Ukraine as Britain was the first to commit to send modern main battle tanks to the country, followed by Germany and the United States.
