Joy Lofthouse as an ATA pilot. (VIA MELODY FOREMAN)
THE DEATH has been announced of former ATA pilot, Joy Lofthouse, writes Melody Foreman.
“I was once told by a test pilot how the Spitfire was a lady in the air but a bitch on the ground! There is so much power there. Once she’s flying, she’s really flying. It was a beautiful aircraft to fly and so very responsive. The Spitfire is a lady’s aircraft through and through. Although I don’t think the designer R J Mitchell had us girls in mind when he imagined who would be at the controls!”, so announced Joy Lofthouse during my interview with her for my book projects.
