The lengthy, original caption reads: “New Guinea Production Centre. New Guinea “Little Detroit”represents the effort of the Ordnance Section of a US Army base somewhere in New Guinea which has set up a series of motor vehicle production lines patterned after those which are famous in the motor city of Detroit, Michigan. Trucks and Jeeps roll off these lines with the precision and despatch that provides the army with important transportation in forward areas. The contrast of mud, muck and mire along with the jungle setting and the industrial setting of the assembly plant, present an interesting sight and is concrete evidence of how the army is going about getting the job done in New Guinea. Over 5500 vehicles have come off the lines Little Detroit assembled and ready for service.
