New Year’s Day, 1943 – the first day in the year of the turning of the tide. Having already secured victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein, British and Dominion forces in North Africa had closed on Tunisia from the west. In November 1942, Anglo-American forces landed in French Morocco and Algeria, and closed on Tunisia from the east. Moreover, the German effort to capture Stalingrad had ground to a halt following a Soviet counteroffensive..

It meant that two Axis army groups, one in Africa, one in Russia, were poised for defeat and destruction in the coming weeks and months.

Meanwhile, back in Berlin, there was a party to plan...
