English Electric Canberra

We profile Britain’s first jet bomber, a record-breaking aircraft that proved its worth in various theatres of war across the globe.

The Canberra is the ultimate home-grown success story. Manufacturer English Electric was a design novice, the industry underdog that, against the odds, rose through the ranks to create an iconic aircraft. Sleek and ergonomic, the Canberra certainly looked the part. But it performed too, ushering in the first generation of jet bombers by setting a range of aviation records for both speed and altitude, some that remain unbroken to this day. It would prove a significant British export and performed valiantly in many air forces around the world. The Canberra has served in almost every major international conflict since World War Two, including both Vietnam and the Falklands – in the latter case against the British!
