LETTER OF THE MONTH

Memories of Lord Ashdown

ABOVE Paddy Ashdown (right) with Mark Dabbs at the Lichfield Garrick.

Dear Editor, I read your obituary on Lord Ashdown in the February issue and having met with him at Lichfield Garrick theatre a few years ago, I would like to add that I found him a most likeable character who assisted me with the Walsall Hospice appeal during his tour of the country promoting his book A Fortunate Life. I was invited to see him when I wrote and asked if he would help – never once did he flinch from taking part. He readily made me feel welcome in his dressing room prior to his going on stage and even though he was making copious notes and trying to get himself into the right frame of mind, he was relaxed and took a real interest in what I was doing. He signed a copy of the book and donated it to the cause. He even had time to pose for this picture with me.
