Memories of Colditz

The features on Colditz (BAW, October 2022) brought back great memories. I was serving in RAF Germany when the Berlin Wall fell and, once restrictions were removed, we toured the castle.

Driving into the little square below Colditz, we walked up through the gateway leading to the inner gate to the POW compound. A man stood in front of the door that I knew Airey Neave used to escape before taking the route I had just walked. We could hear he was speaking French, but as we approached he spoke to us in English and said he could take us to the POW compound. At that time, the castle was again being used as a mental hospital, so we had to stick with him.
