Charlie Stemp explains how a group of electrical engineers worked out how to easily convert Land Rovers from 12 to 24v

In the 70s and 80s in what was known as the Lucas Aerospace No 2 building in Hemel Hempstead worked a small group of electrical engineers, myself included. We were known as Lucas Defence Systems, an unofficial title as these men and one woman, Barbara Gray, were in fact a division of G & E Bradley, another Lucas company, miles away in Neasden.

In this secret office, feasibility studies and reports were written for the Ministry of Defence and the main defence companies. The biggest project was the electrical system, taken from feasibility study, through design to full development for Warrior, the main armoured vehicle of the British Army.
