For 75 years, Operation Market Garden has continued to inspire controversy which shows no sign of abating. Many historians consider it a costly failure which led to the almost complete loss of an entire division of elite airborne soldiers, while others view it as the springboard that finally led to the collapse of the Third Reich.
Certainly, the plan was uncharacteristically bold for its originator, Gen Bernard Montgomery who was noted for his meticulous planning and build-up of overwhelming force before committing his divisions to the fray.
