German halftrack restoration takes shape

Bruce Crompton discusses the restoration of a wartime German Sdkfz 251/7 halftrack

Over the years I’ve discussed numerous ground up restoration projects undertaken at Axis Track Services, which viewers may have seen on our TV show Combat Dealers.

Time moves on and new projects come up, so along with this column we have relaunched the Amazing War Stories initiative, a podcast that takes real stories from our museums and re-tells them in a new and dramatic format using 3D sound. The aim of this extensive project is to honour, preserve and support our military heritage.

So, my regular contributions in CMV will discuss this while also giving you updates on the restorations being undertaken in the Axis Track Services workshops along with a round-up of other interesting restorations undertaken by fellow enthusiasts. Currently, we’re working on the complete restoration of an Sdkfz 251/7 halftrack. This is a vehicle I acquired a number of years ago and have been eager to get started on. While many wartime vehicles, especially German chassis and armour, tend to survive in reasonable condition, unfortunately many of the softer skin parts do not.
