Global War Books

Collectable Books On the Shelf

This month's collectable book is one from a comprehensive series about World War Two and its aftermath, published during the 1970s in countries right around the world

Back when I was a kid and my enthusiasm for military vehicles was largely confined to Airfix models, I started collecting a series of then recently published books about numerous aspects of World War Two.

A highlight of half-term holiday trips to Liverpool with Mum to buy new school trousers was a chance to spend my pocket money on these books in Blacklers' basement. It was a famous department store in the 'Pool and had these books piled high on some sort of clearance offer.

Much later, I discovered that from 1968 until 1975 Ballantine Books published this extensive series of paperback books in both the USA and UK and to confuse things a bit, the same series was also published in the UK by McDonald and Co although the MacDonald editions were printed and bound by Purnell & Sons Ltd.
