Those who have been to Normandy during the first week of June over the past 30 years will be familiar with the sight of bemedalled Allied veterans attending commemorations, remembering their friends and congregating in bars and cafes. Their respectful pilgrimages became headline news during the 70th anniversary commemorations in 2014 when Bernard Jordan grabbed the nation's attention.
