Norman Gerrish’s life as a grocer’s assistant was transformed when he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in May 1941 and became a ground gunner. After completing his training, the 20-year-old from Bristol joined 810 Squadron, which was based at Pocklington in Yorkshire, at the time, defending the bomber airfield.
