ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE BRISTOL FREIGHTER AIRCRAFT EVACUATED THE LAST OF THE COUNTRY’S PERSONNEL FROM SAIGON JUST DAYS BEFORE THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL FELL TO THE COMMUNISTS IN 1975.

During the latter months of 1974, it was clear that America’s war in Vietnam was going to end very badly for the superpower and her allies. New Zealand had been involved in the conflict since the mid-1960s, but had withdrawn its combat forces by 1971 – although a medical unit remained in situ, necessitating regular re-supply missions by decidedly elderly RNZAF Bristol Freighters of 41 Squadron.
