LINCOLNSHIRE HERO | A MOST VALIANT CAPTAIN

Captain Edward Welchman fought valiantly in the Boer War, in India and during the Great War and his service is commemorated in the village where he once lived.

The last name recorded on the 1914-1918 plate on the war memorial that stands on the village green in the Lincolnshire village of Heckington is ‘E T Welchman DSO’. He is also remembered on a plaque within the nave of the nearby church of St Andrew’s that states: “In loving and honoured memory of Captain Edward Theodore Welchman DSO, West Yorkshire Regiment, who died of wounds received in battle in France on October 26, 1914, aged 33. He spent his boyhood in this parish. RIP.”
