A fundraising campaign has begun to establish a memorial dedicated to British veterans of the American Civil War, reports Alex Bowers.
One in four people in serving the United States Federal armed forces during the conflict were immigrants, with 543,000 foreign nationals donning uniform among more than two million Union Army soldiers. Immigrants and their offspring constituted an estimated 43% of the Union’s manpower, with some 50,000 volunteers hailing from Britain.
