John Nettleton was awarded the VC for leading an attack on the MAN diesel engine factory at Augsburg, Southern Germany, 1,000 miles away from his Lincolnshire base

John Dering Nettleton was born in Nongoma, Natal Province, South Africa on June 28, 1917 and educated in Cape Town before joining in the South African Merchant Marine. After 18 months at sea he took up civil engineering working for Cape Town’s city council.
