Wartime Christmas

In this seasonal special, Austin J Ruddy charts collectibles from Britain’s six World War Two Christmases, with some poignant mementos of the era.

Christmas has always been a traditional celebration of light amidst the darkness and in wartime it had additional importance, though it could not escape the impact of war. There was little ‘Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men’. Families faced shortages, losses and separations, but much effort went into making it a special occasion, come what may.
