A popular way for Eastern Bloc countries to flex their muscles in front of both their own populations and western ‘aggressors’ during the Cold War was by staging huge military parades such as the annual May 9 Victory Day extravaganza. These impressive events, sequentially viewed by the likes of Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev saw huge missiles towed by trucks, columns of tanks and battalions of marching infantry in Moscow’s Red Square.
