KIM HUGHES is the most highly decorated bomb disposal operator serving in the British Armed Forces. He currently serves in 11 EOD Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps as Warrant Officer Class 1. Hughes was awarded the George Cross after defusing 119 bombs on a six-month tour to Afghanistan, Op. Herrick 10, which ran from April to October 2009. Painting the Sand is his account of what happened on that tour, and how he and his unit, Brimstone 42, dealt with the sights and sounds they were faced with - everything from firefights, ambushes and awkward encounters with Estonians.
