HM: You were born in Coventry nine years after the war ended and 14 years after the Coventry Blitz. You describe yourself as one of the luckiest humans alive, not just because of the gilded success of your second-act career as a writer, but because you escaped the trauma of the two previous generations. But that doesn’t mean war didn’t loom large in your life.
