THE Jewish story of the Second World War is dominated by the Holocaust. Perhaps as a result of that tragic legacy, the part played by Jewish people who fought the Nazi regime is, to an extent, somewhat overshadowed. And yet, in all Allied forces, those of the Jewish faith served in large numbers. Visits to cemeteries maintained by the CWGC or American Battle Monuments Commission reveal headstones marked with the Star of David rather than the Christian symbol of faith. Frequently, visitors place stones or pebbles atop these grave markers in the time-honoured and poignant fashion of Jewish remembrance – and it is remembrance that is the theme of this beautiful book.
