War Wheels, Foxfield’s Railway Event

For the past five years a small part of Staffordshire has regularly been taken over by military vehicles in May. War Wheels at Foxfield’s Railway – situated at Blythe Bridge on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent – has now become a regular event in the Midlands region, with the added bonus of it being free entry for all who attend.

Organised by the North Staffordshire MVT, in conjunction with the railway, the 2018 event once again saw a good turnout of green machines – both from World War Two and post-war eras – spread out among the hard-standing station car park at Blyth Bridge and the surrounding land.

In total there were just over 50 military vehicles in attendance over the course of the two-day event: from Jeeps to a Ward LaFrance M1A1 Heavy Wrecker, with a Universal Carrier thrown in for good measure.

This year also saw the added attraction of a replica Mk IX Spitfire – painted in the colours of EN938, the aircraft of World War Two fighter ace Johnnie Johnson. The Spitfire, which has a Merlin Engine fitted, was fired up at regular intervals during the day of our visit – drawing in the crowds every time.
