A fundraiser has been launched to save the historic warship that rescued British troops trapped by the Germans in France. Allan George reports
HQS Wellington – the former HMS Wellington – a pre-war escort vessel moored at London’s Victoria Embankment on the Thames, needs essential repairs. The cost of the restorative works planned for the ex-Royal Navy sloop, which celebrated its 90th anniversary this May, are estimated at £150,000.
The ship is owned by the Wellington Trust charity, having previously been the home of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.
The Trust has been set up to preserve Wellington as part of Britain’s maritime heritage and to educate the public in the history of the British and Commonwealth Merchant Services and the importance of seaborne trade to the nation. Professor Dominic Tweddle, chairman of The Wellington Trust and campaign director for the Wellington@90 campaign, explained the importance of the appeal: “This year HMS Wellington is celebrating her 90th anniversary.
