I am sometimes asked to do research for other military historians if they know I have scheduled a visit to a particular archive and I am always happy to help out.

On one such occasion in July 2019, I spent the hottest day of the year in the pleasant air-conditioned reading rooms at the National Archives in Kew, London. I had ordered some documents on Martel’s 1925 one-man tank and was only expecting a few files, but a large box with a heavyweight warning on the front was delivered to my document collection point.
