John Ash attended arguably Britain’s fastest growing World War Two event and discovered it is one for next year’s calendar

Iwasn’t sure what I was going to make of the We Have Ways Fest. This was my first visit to this relatively new event, born out of the success of Al Murray and James Holland’s We Have Ways of Making You Talk podcast.

The notion of pairing essentially a World War Two conference with the rough and tumble of a muddy (or dusty – weather dependant!) military vehicle show was something I thought might work, yet I could not help but think the two audiences might not blend entirely comfortably.

Then there is the elephant, or in this case perhaps the 50-ton tank destroyer in the room: ticket price. Full disclosure, I entered on a press pass, but I was fully aware of the standard ticketing: £97 for Friday only, £104 for Saturday and £187 for, in the organiser’s words, “the full monty” – and that was without camping or glamping! Frankly, the pricing set high expectations and I was anxious that it all might fall short or thin the audience. However, there was little opportunity to be disappointed.
