Across the free world, newspaper headlines screamed ‘Nazis Quit’ ‘European War Ends’ and ‘Germany Capitulates’ The cover of Time magazine on May 7, 1945, featured Hitler’s portrait with a red ‘X’ scrawled over it. Crowds from Paris to Prague and Washington DC to Whitehall were swept along in the delirium of triumph and relief, toppling statues, burning German flags, destroying Nazi paraphernalia and settling scores with collaborators, war criminals and officials.
