Craig Moore investigates the Aktiv-Fisher Snow-Trac ST4, a highly versatile off-road tracked vehicle designed to plough its way through snow, sleet and sand

In August 2021, while walking around the outer fields of the Yorkshire Wartime Experience event, my eyes were drawn to a small bright red vehicle surrounded by a sea of dark green Cold War British armoured fighting vehicles and lorries. It was a Swedish-manufactured Aktiv-Fisher Snow-Trac ST4 owned by Karl these military vehicles, but then I remembered that it was one of the first purpose-built off-road tracked vehicles designed to deal with extremely cold weather and thick snow.

It was purchased by the War Office during the Cold War, to transport men and equipment in northern European winter battlefield conditions. Winters in Sweden are normally very cold with very low temperatures and thick snowfall is very common.
