Will Simpkins and his 1943 Ford GPW are proof the classic military vehicle hobby is alive and well among the younger generation
Ever since his dad Crawford bought a World War Two-era Jeep in 2012 for his mum Debra, Will Simpkins has been hooked on military vehicles, weapons and equipment used in the conflict. Just eight years old at the time, Will said his fascination with the Jeep had sparked his interest in the war, an interest that has since grown into a major hobby that sees him trawl the Internet and travel to shows around the country in search of militaria.
Today, the 20-year-old university student co-owns with his dad a 1943 M3A1 Halftrack and an immaculate 1943 Ford GPW, along with an impressive collection of wartime militaria. “My dad first bought a Ford GPW in 2012 for my mum as a birthday present because she used to love watching M*A*S*H,” explained Will. “Ever since then I’ve been hooked on World War Two and it’s taken over my life – whether it’s kit, vehicles or shows.”
