Boxing clever

The British Army has selected the Boxer RCH155 selfpropelled gun to replace the AS90 as part of the Mobile Fires Project.

The April announcement will see the procurement of the approximately 39-tonne vehicle, which requires only a two-person crew against the AS90’s five. The RCH155 is armed with a 155mm L/52 gun with a range of up to 33½ miles and, uniquely, can fire on the move.

The system is a modular variant of the Boxer, developed by ARTEC GmbH, a consortium including Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall. Boxer comprises a 25-tonne, 8x8 drive platform standard across all versions on which role-specific modules are installed. It was selected by the British in 2018, with 623 ordered and the first currently undergoing trials with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
