Focus on RAF 100

(CROWN COPYRIGHT)

This evocative scene, ‘Remembrance’, shows the East Kirby Lancaster ‘Just Jane’ with a crew of reenactors. Taken by Cpl Tim Laurence for the RAF100 Photographic Competition, it is a tribute to those killed flying for Bomber Command and brings to mind the daunting task faced by those crews. The annual competition – originally established to develop the skills of military photographers – celebrates RAF achievements while commemorating the contributions of all personnel. It now aims to inspire the next generation of prospective pilots, armourers, controllers, and all roles offered by the century-old service. This year, more than 1,000 photographs were submitted, including 250 entries in the first ever amateur category – uniquely open to all-comers. ‘Remembrance’ was one of nine that made the shortlist for the ‘Peoples’ Choice’ category. Voting had closed by the time Britain at War had gone to press, but the winner was due to be announced on 20 September.
