The Long Road to the Garden of England

Duncan Glen and his family had a long, but very pleasant, journey to this year’s War And Peace Revival

Traditionally, we have made the long trip in the Matador from Northumberland to Kent for the War and Peace Revival show overnight but recent years have seen a huge increase in overnight closures for road works.

These have led to tortuous diversions and when you are travelling at a maximum of 35mph this can add hours on to an already long journey. In 2017, as a result of poor coordination by the Highways Agency, we ended up going along the M18 twice and at one point were heading for Kent via Hull!

This year we opted for a 4.30am start on the Friday morning and having packed the back of the Matador with everything that three generations of a family are likely to need for a week living in a field, it was a slightly bleary-eyed crew that left Rothbury on a cool, clear summer morning. The first stage of the journey follows the twists and turns of the Coquet valley then south to meet with the A1. This involves a bit of nifty gearbox work particularly as the truck felt a little sluggish until all of the oils got properly heated through and everything loosened up.
