BAT FIRST glance, this might appear to be just another ‘coffee table book’ looking at the subject of The Great War. But it is very much more than that. And it certainly not of the coffee table book genre, either. It was without the slightest hesitation, therefore, that Britain at War nominated this as their Book of the Month for July. Truly, never was such an accolade more richly deserved for a book which takes a fascinating look at the memorials, cemeteries and epitaphs of the First World War - with its prime emphasis on those appertaining to Canada.

Indeed, there could be no truer witness to the enormity of the war than those very memorials along what was the old Western Front. In Canada, no less than in the other Dominions of the British Empire, the war left a conflicting legacy of pride and sorrow that endures to this day.
